One of the leading causes of skin cancer is sun exposure. Scientists say that
skin cancer can be prevented by avoiding periodic overexposure to sun coz sun’s UV rays damages DNA in the skin. The main cause of skin cancer is harmful UV rays but its intensity of risk depends on the skin type and its color.People who have very fair complexion are more vulnerable to skin cancer than the people with darker complexion.
In most of the cases skin cancer in people with darker complexion is identified at a later stage.
Vitiligo is often thought to be a precancerous condition but that is not the case. Due to absence of melanin in people with vitiligo their skin becomes sensitive to harmful UV rays. Melanin is the pigment which gives us protection against harmful UV rays but due to absence of melanin in vitiligo patients their skin becomes susceptible to sun’s UV rays which can result in melanoma.
It has been found that in some cases people with melanoma develop white patches on skin in the vicinity of their melanoma but these patches are not vitiligo.
Many people think wrinkles and age spots as normal part of aging but these are caused by excessive exposure to sun. Some of main damages caused excessive periodic sun exposures are skin cancer, benign tumors, fine & coarse wrinkles, freckles, mottled pigmentation, sallowness, telangiectasias, and elastosis.
Always use some protection when going under the sun like sunscreens, wear wide-brimmed hats and protective clothing. Avoid going out in the sun between 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M during the summers.
