The white patches of vitiligo also referred as “lesions” by the dermatologists. It is mentioned in an article of “The Archives of Dermatology”.These lesions usually appeared on skin due to the lack of melanin (a color producing pigment). These lesions may also, sometime, appear on both the mucous membranes and in the retina of the eyeball. Vitiligo also affects the natural look of hair color that grows on lesions and turns them white or grey. In short, vitiligo is a chronic condition in which melanocytes in the skin are destroyed. As a result, white patches or lesions appear on the skin at different parts of the body. It is a therapeutic challenge and many researches have been trying their best to find out an effective treatment for vitiligo.
Recently, dermatologist has discovered that, the 308-nm (nanometer) excimer laser is very effective for the treatment of vitiligo. They performed many experiments and concluded that, the patients with vitiligo had better repigmentation of vitiligo patches when they were treated with a combination of laser therapy and tacrolimus ointment. This treatment is very effective then laser treatment alone.
Mr. Thierry Passeron, M.D; of a hospital in France and his colleagues had deeply investigated this therapy on some vitiligo patients of aged 12 to 63 years. They have observed that the effects of the 308-nm excimer laser in combination with tacrolimus on these people. Finally, they concluded that, “If 308-nm excimer laser therapy in combination of 0.1 percent tacrolimus ointment is applied twice daily for twice a week on a vitiligo patient, then it will give an excellent result on UV-sensitive and UV-resistant areas. Finally these researchers concluded that, “This treatment was much tolerated, and the patients were satisfied”.
