Recently, Superstar Michael Jackson and more than 40 million others who were suffered from a de-pigmenting skin disease, now have a better way to predict the effectiveness of vitiligo treatment, with the help of a tool called the Vitiligo Area Scoring Index (VASI). It is a simple scale, which allows vitiligo people and clinicians to speak a common language while, discussing how vitiligo is responding to treatment.
Normally, different patterns of vitiligo respond differently to any type of vitiligo treatment. Hence, each vitiligo therapy must be evaluated according to the degree of repigmentation that can be expected. The similar index is used to evaluate psoriasis treatment. So this tool does guesswork in order to predict the outcome of these treatment This tool also gives a better idea of treatment options to both doctor and patient among the variety of treatment and helps them to choose the best one.
In short, Dermatologists, now thanks to this clinical measurement tool created by Prof. Harvey Lui, of a University of British Columbiadermatology researcher. He is also a researcher at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), and has developed this standardized quantitative scale for knowing the effectiveness of vitiligo treatment.
